Where Did the Baby Cyrus Foundation
Get its Funding From?
The Baby Cyrus Foundation was born, in part, from accountability. Its initial funding came from a multiple six-figure settlement paid following litigation against the Meridian Police Department arising from the ordeal suffered by Baby Cyrus and the Anderson family. Rather than continue toward a jury trial—where members of the community would have been asked to judge the conduct of those involved—the case was resolved through a substantial settlement. The Anderson family chose not to spend years dragging the case through the courts, enriching lawyers, exhausting themselves, and repeatedly reliving one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives. Instead, they chose to take the proceeds of that settlement and turn what had been inflicted upon their family into something capable of protecting other families.
Not one dime of that settlement was kept by the Anderson family for their personal benefit. The money was committed to the Baby Cyrus Foundation and to the larger fight that grew out of what happened to their son. There is a profound poetic justice in that outcome. The very law-enforcement agency that the family holds responsible for initiating and carrying out Baby Cyrus’s wrongful seizure ultimately became, through its settlement payment, the financial catalyst for an organization dedicated to preventing other children and parents from suffering similar abuses.
